Dollar Store Creation - DIY Sunburst Mirror

I love my pretty new mirror!

Sunburst Mirrors was a phase I thought would pass so I didn't purchase one.  But they are still around and there are so many different styles.

Here are some pretty ones...

I especially like the last one - it is from Crate & Barrel.  The rest are from Simply Mirrors.

I started thinking...what if I could make one?  What if I could make one from stuff from the Dollar Store or from cheap stuff from Lowe's?  And so it became a challenge.

Here is the play by play on how I created this mirror with Popsicle sticks, a pizza pan, Mardi Gras beads, glue and paint.

First I wanted a base so I purchased a cheap pizza pan from Target.  I then took a hammer and nail and made two small holes  on each side of the pan.  I took picture wire and thread it through each hole and secured it by twisting it around itself.  I tested it on the wall to make sure it would hang nicely before I started on the project.

I was all set to glue the Popsicle sticks onto the pan but I realized the glue wouldn't stick.  So I cut out a piece of brown craft paper and glued that to the backside of the pan using Tacky Glue.

Then I placed my mirror from the dollar store in the center of the pan with some tape to hold it in place.  I also placed the beads as well so I could gauge where I wanted to put the Popsicle sticks.  I decided to place one stick coming out at every bead so they would be evenly spaced apart.

When all the sticks were placed down I painted them with gesso and then white craft paint.  I then layered antique gold paint on top and then a layer of acrylic varnish.

I like the way the paint beaded against the pan.  If you wanted a solid look I would paint the pan first.

It was easy to hang since I had wired it before beginning the project.

  3. The cost was about $8 and here is the breakdown...$4.99 for the pizza pan (but you could get this from the dollar store), $1 for the beads, $2 for the popsicle sticks. I had the paint and glue on hand. If you didn't have those things, the price would go up a bit.
